INCLUSION BEGINS
WITH COMMUNICATION

With the premise that accessibility is not an option but a responsibility of society as a whole.
At Overseas Translations we understand that interpreting means building real bridges between people. Our sign language interpreting service is born out of our commitment to equal opportunities and universal communication.

What is sign language interpreting?

Sign language interpreting is not a simple word-for-word transposition. It is a complex linguistic process that requires:

  • Proficiency in the specific sign language
  • Understanding the cultural and communicative context
  • Ability to interpret complex oral messages (technical, legal, medical, academic)
  • Experience in simultaneous or consecutive interpretation

It is therefore essential to use the appropriate sign language in each case and to have interpreters trained specifically for that language combination.

LSE, LSC and International Sign System: we tell you the differences

One of the most common misconceptions is that there is a single universal sign language. In practice, this is not the case.

Spanish Sign Language (LSE)

LSE is the sign language used in most of Spain.
It has its own grammar, lexicon and structure, and is not a signed version of spoken Spanish.

It is commonly used in:

  • Institutional and corporate events
  • Training
  • Professional meetings
  • Health and public services
  • Educational and academic environments

Catalan Sign Language (LSC)

LSC is a sign language different from LSE, mainly used in Catalonia.
They are not mutually intelligible automatically.

Therefore, it is key to define correctly:

  • What sign language is used by the public
  • What sign language the event or service requires

At Overseas Translations we always confirm this point before assigning interpreters, to avoid critical accessibility errors.

International Sign System (IS / International Sign)

The International Sign System is not a native language, but a communication system used in international contexts.

It is mainly used in:

  • International congresses
  • Events with deaf audiences from different countries
  • International academic conferences

It requires interpreters with specific expertise, as it combines elements of different sign languages and communicative strategies adapted to international audiences.

What services do we offer?
