This is the mode of interpretation in which the interpreter translates the speaker’s discourse in real time and simultaneously. At no point is the discourse interrupted; both the speaker’s speech and the interpreter’s rendering are delivered at the same time. This type of oral translation fully reproduces the content of the original message, its tonality, expressions and intent.

Simultaneous interpreters work in an interpreting booth. It is a fully soundproof space equipped with a console, a headset and a microphone. This equipment allows the interpreter to hear the speaker’s message, render it and relay it through the console. The translation then reaches the audience through receiving equipment.
This process means that the translation reaches the audience a little later than the original speech. This extra time allows the interpreter to analyse complex verbal constructions, idiomatic expressions, discourse intention, etc. Within seconds he or she overcomes any obstacles and translates the message into the target language.
This delay can vary but is usually between five to ten seconds, which is why this mode is called simultaneous.
