In consecutive interpreting, the interpreter begins the oral translation once the speaker has stopped or paused. During the source message discourse, the interpreter takes notes that help him to reproduce the original speech as accurately as possible.
This mode does not require any technical equipment; the interpreter sits next to the speaker(s) with a notepad. The correct positioning of the interpreter is crucial to ensure that no part of the discourse is missed.
Consecutive interpreting requires specialist short-term memory and note-taking training. Experts in this discipline have developed a particular note-taking method with a great variety of symbols and markings that help them retain the substance or the expressive style of the speech.
A professional interpreter can usually interpret up to fifteen minutes of the speaker’s speech in one turn. In the case of a long speech, a break every quarter of an hour is required to ensure the quality of the service.
