Whispered interpreting, also known as chuchotage, is a variant of simultaneous interpreting. Its particularity is that the interpreter is not in the booth but sits or stands close to the listener and whispers the translation simultaneously into their ear.
This mode does not require any technical equipment and the location of the interpreter is key: he or she should be as close to the listener as possible so as to be able to reproduce the original message in a low voice, without interfering with the speaker.
Chuchotage, being a sub-mode of simultaneous interpreting, involves the same techniques as simultaneous interpreting. This method also focuses on the fluency of delivery and on avoiding interrupting the original speech to ensure that the communication with the speaker conveys the original impact and purpose.
