We transform words into clients that transcend borders

Desde Overseas Translations ayudamos a Virgin Voyages a cubrir un crucero inclusivo por el Caribe con nuestro servicio de interpretación de lengua de signos (EN<>LSE/LSF)

BACKGROUND

Ahoy!

When Virgin Voyages received a last-minute request to provide professional sign language interpreting on its upcoming Caribbean cruise, it turned to Overseas Translations. With less than two weeks before the ship set sail, what began as an urgent service request quickly became a large-scale interpreting operation covering several sign languages, onboard services and live activities throughout an entire voyage. It was no ordinary assignment: the source language was spoken English, and interpreting into and from Spanish and French Sign Language was required (EN<>LSE/LSF), a combination that very few interpreters can cover.

On paper the assignment sounded very appealing: “Sign language interpreting service on a Caribbean cruise aboard the Valiant Lady, from the prestigious company Virgin Voyages”, with the following itinerary:

Day 1: San Juan (Puerto Rico)
Day 2: Philipsburg (Sint Maarten)
Day 3: At sea
Day 4: Bridgetown (Barbados)
Day 5: Fort-de-France (Martinique)
Day 6: Saint John’s (Antigua and Barbuda)
Day 7: Tortola (British Virgin Islands)
Day 8: Return to San Juan (Puerto Rico)

As Caribbean as it sounded, the goal was clear from the start: to make sure deaf and hard-of-hearing passengers could fully enjoy every experience of the trip thanks to professional sign language interpreting adapted to their specific communication needs.

CHALLENGE

SOLUTION

In less than two weeks we put together a team of four sign language interpreters (two for LSE and two for LSF) who travelled from Spain and France to board the Valiant Lady. For eight days they covered all the activities on the cruise: information sessions, live shows and excursions at every port.

Travellers felt supported at all times. Virgin Voyages received direct congratulations for making the cruise a truly accessible experience.

Our team included sign language interpreters who travelled from Spain (LSE) and a pair of interpreters who travelled from Toulouse, France (LSF).

The whole process was coordinated with the client and with our Sales and Production teams to make sure every detail was accounted for.
